Pack your things smartly.

·         Pack each room separately. Number each box and make a list of which box goes to which room in your new home. For example, boxes 1 to 5 must go to the living room, box 6 to the master bedroom, and so on;

·         put socks on glasses;

·         Pack service with towels;

·         Put bottles in anti-leak bags;

·         Put books in rolling cases;

·         Wrap cabinets with foil;

·         If you put all the cords together in a bag, take a picture of the back of the device they were in so that you know how to put them back in the device afterward.

Think about what you need.

The things you will definitely need for a move are: protective packaging materials, moving blankets, moving boxes, filling material for the boxes, a hand truck, a moving truck, chilled packaging box to store food and drinks for the moving day.

The first days without internet?

If you wait to arrange the transfer of your internet or TV subscription, you may just have to wait for days, and you will therefore be without internet in your new home.

Also, keep in mind that some providers do not deliver in certain areas. Newly built houses are often not yet connected to all networks.

Befriend your helpers

If you are helped by family/friends, make sure you have something to eat and drink for them. This way you keep a better atmosphere, which benefits the move.

Pretend you're going away for the weekend.

Make a holiday suitcase in advance with things as if you were going away for a weekend. This contains all the essential items to survive the first two days.

Think about whether you need a moving company.

Are you going to move yourself, or would you rather hire a moving company? Moving with a moving company can be expensive, so if you can do it yourself, that is the best.

For example, do you have to move a piano and have a difficult spiral staircase? It might be an idea to hire a moving company. They have experience with such situations and may have a moving lift for difficult items.

You can also choose to do the easy things yourself and hire a moving company for the difficult and heavy things. This, of course, saves on the price!

Check whether you are entitled to a subsidy.

In some cases, you may be eligible for a relocation grant. Check here what you have to meet and how much you can get.

Moving boxes can ruin your day.

You have packed your moving box a little too heavily, and suddenly, it tears, and everything falls on the floor during the move. You don't want this! Therefore, do not go for the cheapest moving boxes; check which boxes are rated best.

Throwing away is better than moving.

Before you start packing: what can be thrown away, and what do you want to take with you? This saves a lot of work during packing. If you are going to move things that you later throw away, that is a wasted effort.

Create peace

Make a moving plan to keep things calm and print it out. Sounds simple but can make a huge difference in your head during the chaos of a move. Use our handy checklist!

This is how you prevent a hernia.

Save your back as much as possible and rent/buy a hand truck. This allows you to move heavy items easily. TIP: did you know that there are even hand trucks that can take you upstairs? This makes it much easier to move a heavy washing machine.

Reserve place

Try to reserve a parking space at your old and new house by putting something in the space. Be mindful of your new neighbors, and try not to get off to a bad start by appearing anti-social right away!

Start early

Start packing as early as possible. Pack the things you won't need soon. For example, in the summer, you can already pack your winter clothes and vice versa. Below you can read how you can best approach packing.

Fire

Put the flammable items in a separate box, and do not close it completely. Clearly state on the box that it contains flammable items, and preferably put the box last in the moving van so that you can take it out first.

screws

Keep all screws together when disassembling furniture. Put them in separate bags per piece of furniture.

Doors

Tape cabinets shut so that the doors do not open is a good idea, but make sure you do not damage the varnish/paint with the tape!

Work systematically

When unpacking: work room by room and preferably start with the room furthest away from the front door, for example, the attic.

7 years of accident

Always keep mirrors and paintings upright and wrap them in a moving blanket, do not lay them flat in the moving van. This way, you prevent broken mirrors and 7 years of accident.
